Our Mission
Solace Charities aims to raise awareness and mobilize financial resources for the work carried out by Solace, a voluntary organization headquartered in Thrissur, India. Since 2007, Solace has been providing much-needed financial, medical, moral and social support for families with kids suffering from terminal illness, with the support of benevolent individuals and corporations around the world.
Solace extends support to get the best available medical treatment for the suffering child in tandem with the medical fraternity. We provide children with life-saving medicines monthly and provide travel and stay to take the child to the hospital for treatment. Solace organizes regular home care visits by a group of dedicated volunteers t, making them feel that they are not alone. We also provide funds for cancer patients for chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and so on.
Solace works to provide a little more space for the child to make them happy. It stands by the family, helping them face the harsh realities by strengthening and comforting them. We support the affected child’s siblings, distribute food kits, and support the family in conducting maintenance work such as repairing roofs of their homes during rains etc.
Solace conducts monthly family strengthening programs to empower parents, especially mothers, and organizes self-support groups.
Sheeba Ameer, who has worked in palliative care for over seventeen years, initiated Solace in 2007. Her own daughter's struggle in various hospitals, including three whole years in Mumbai's Tata Hospital, which is Asia's largest cancer treatment center, is what led her to discover the severity of the situation that most of the families were in. Her desire to support these children with long-term illness, and their families is what eventually drove her to begin Solace.
She saw many children and their parents suffering from poverty. Many parents weren't able to afford even the food their ailing child needed. They wouldn't be sure whether their child would live or not, and yet they couldn't stay by their child's side—they had to go to work to earn a livelihood. Such sights bothered her no end. It was from there she was determined to lend some support to such children.
With her suffering daughter on one side, she used to take part in the palliative activities of the Pain and Palliative Care Society, Thrissur, Kerala. She went there almost every day after tending to her daughter's needs for seven years. She spent time with patients with terminal illnesses and their families, which helped her learn how to take complete care of a person diagnosed with cancer or any other life-threatening disease. Her experience there was the foundation for starting "Solace" with a dedicated team of trustees and volunteers. Her intention was to do something for the children who are suffering from long-term life threatening illnesses.
Solace, at its earliest stage, was providing support to only 15 children, but that number grew explosively. Now, the support spreads to more than 1300 children who have cancer, thalassemia, cerebral palsy, nephrotic syndrome, hemophilia, heart diseases, fits, Wilson's disease, intellectual disability, juvenile arthritis, epilepsy, hearing loss etc.
Solace Charities, Inc., headquartered in Dallas, Texas, has been actively supporting various activities of Solace Kerala since 2017. You can read more about our US chapters here. If you have any questions, please email them to info@solacecharities.org.
